Art

Welcome to Art

Art and Design at Uffculme School is interesting, fun and enjoyable.

All students study Art and Design in Key Stage 3. We encourage development of ideas and problem solving, both essential life skills, as well as encouraging students to appreciate things aesthetically and developing their technical skills. Students are given the opportunity to work in a range of different media, from computer generated art to sculpting in clay as well as more traditional drawing and painting skills. At Uffculme School, we use sketchbooks to document the creative process and encourage reflection upon this. Students are encouraged to take creative risks and have fun exploring their ideas.

The Art GCSE is an optional course suitable for any student who has enthusiasm and commitment.  Skill levels may vary, but a positive attitude to improvement and learning is very important. This course will include preparation and sketchbook work, research, drawing and development of idea. Students will use a variety of different media and the use of artists to create ambitious final pieces.

Art and Design is all about ideas and self-expression. The UK leads the world in the creative industries and they are the fastest growing sectors in the UK economy. They contribute over £115bn to the UK economy and account for 10% of Gross Domestic Product, making them Britain’s leading industries. Britain has Europe’s largest architecture industry and the world’s third largest advertising industry. These areas, together with fine art, crafts, design, fashion, film, computer games, publishing and TV represent over 2 million jobs.

Many of our ex-students now work in industries such as architecture, car design, animation, graphic and interior design - we even have a few ex-students who are artists too.

If you would like to see some of the work produced by our talented students, please visit the Art Department Instagram Page (click on the link to view).

At KS3, the department follows a programme designed to build students knowledge, skills, understanding and confidence in the subject

At KS4, the department follows the AQA GCSE exam course. A link to the AQA Art and Design specification can be found here. For the Year 11 Assessment Objective Marking Sheet, please go here.

Extra Curricular Opportunities

All students are encouraged to visit Art galleries and museums to extend their learning and understanding.

We organise opportunities to extend students’ learning and help them to gain new experiences. Recent trips have been to London for the Tate galleries with our Key Stage 4 students and Falmouth University with the Textiles students. We also invite local artists to visit to give more understanding of working practices.

We have a very successful ArtsAward club in KS4 that encourages students to develop their skills and gain extra qualifications (Bronze or Silver ArtsAward).

We also have an “open house” policy. Art rooms should be a place of exploration and fun. Students can use our 3 well equipped art rooms to create work and develop their imagination.
