Physical Education
Welcome to PE
The Physical Education curriculum aims to inspire all students to develop their competence and to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
Students build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in KS1 and KS2 to become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques and learn to apply them across a range of different sports and physical activities. Students learn what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work. The curriculum develops students’ abilities to work both as individuals and in groups or teams. Students develop confidence and enthusiasm which helps them to get involved in exercise, sports and activities, out of school and in later life, as well as to understand and apply the long-term health benefits of physical activity.
Students are taught to do the following:
Use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games (e.g. badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and tennis)
Develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports (e.g. athletics and gymnastics)
Perform dance pieces using advanced dance techniques in a range of styles and forms
Take part in outdoor and adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and encourage students to work in a team, building trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group
Analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
Take part in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs
Curriculum and Qualifications
Key Stage 3
The KS3 PE Curriculum is made up of a range of sports and physical activities. Students are taught and encouraged to:
Use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games (e.g. badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and tennis)
Develop their skills, techniques and performance in other competitive sports (e.g. athletics and gymnastics)

Key Stage 4 - Core PE (Non-Examination)
The KS4 Curriculum is a flexible programme designed to provide students with choice about which activities they would like to take part in. Each student completes a form highlighting their preferred activities. The KS4 programme provides opportunities for students to experience a wide range of sporting activities, with emphasis placed on the activities the students have enjoyed the most in KS3, or new activities they would like to participate in. The curriculum is based around continuing to develop students' skill, knowledge and performance from KS3, alongside reinforcing and continuing to develop healthy lifestyle habits which will stay with the students for the rest of their lives.
Key Stage 4 - Option Subjects (leading to qualifications)
In KS4, students also have the option to take one of the following courses (please click on the links to view the course specifications);

Extra Curricular Opportunities
Extra-curricular activities are very much seen as part of the curriculum offer at Uffculme School and all students are welcome to get involved, regardless of ability. All students are actively encouraged to attend at least two extra-curricular clubs to increase their practise time and to develop their knowledge and skills outside of the two hours of core PE they have per week.
Clubs take place during lunchtimes and after school. Some students attend clubs to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding; some students attend to make new friends; some to maintain or increase their fitness levels and some attend with the aim of representing Uffculme School and taking part in fixtures. Whatever the student’s motivation is, as long as they have the correct kit for the activity, attend regularly and have a positive attitude they are always welcome.
In addition, for Year 11 students there is the opportunity to attend the annual Ski Trip which runs every December.
